It’s a Mammal

Do you have a pet mammal? If you have a dog or cat you have a mammal.
Hamsters and gerbils and guinea pigs are mammals, too. And so are you.
Maybe you’ve seen a cow feeding her calf. The calf drank milk from its
mother’s body. Of all the animals, only mammals do this.
Mammals are warm-blooded. The day may be freezing cold or very hot but
mammals’ bodies stay at just about the same temperature all the time.
Mammals have fur or hair. The fur can be short or long, straight or
curly, soft or hard. There may be lots of it, or just a few thick, stiff
hairs.
There are nearly one million kinds of insects and more than 21,000 kinds
of fish. There are only about 4,000 kinds of mamĀmals. But of all the
animals, mammals are the ones we most often choose for our pets and
helpers.
